The Moment He Realizes the Truth
Days passed. Search parties dragged the woods. Drones scanned the highway ditches. Volunteers combed the fields and riverbanks.
Weeks later, Martin returned to the same gas station. Something about the place felt different now—heavier, haunted.

The clerk looked up when he walked in.
“You again,” he murmured.
Martin swallowed. “Did anyone ever come back? Anyone ask more questions?” The clerk shook his head. “Media were here for a while… but no one else. Just you.” Martin stepped outside, staring into the stretch of quiet road where his wife had once stood, drenched and heartbroken.
For the first time, he understood something he hadn’t allowed himself to see before: She hadn’t merely walked away from the gas station. She had walked away from him. Not because of that night, but because of every night before it. The prank wasn’t the cause. It was the final proof.
