The Morning Ritual on the Porch
That Friday morning seemed like any other. My daughter, muffin in hand, anxiously waits, her excitement radiating from her every movement. As soon as she hears the truck’s rumble approaching, she jumps up, practically bubbling with joy. Her happiness is so contagious that I can’t help but smile without realizing it. There’s something magical about her connection with that truck, as if it’s an event she’s been waiting for all week.

The usual exchange
“Hey, Mr. Jack!” Ella calls out brightly, her voice as sweet as a song. Jack, the garbage collector, responds with his familiar, warm smile and leans in slightly to take Ella’s small hands, accepting the gift she offers—this time, a muffin. There’s a tenderness in their interaction, an unspoken tradition that plays out every Friday, full of warmth. But today, I feel a strange sense of unease as I watch them.
As Jack slips the muffin into his pocket, I focus on his eyes. Sometimes, they seem to glisten, almost as if he’s about to cry, though he tries to conceal it behind his weathered gloves. I once thought it was because Ella brought a little sunshine into his day. But now, I can’t help but wonder if there’s something deeper going on.
