Forcing a Smile
“I’m just tired, that’s all,” I said, forcing a smile that felt as difficult as wringing water from an old towel. His face softened, and the need to appear unperturbed grew even stronger. Although uneasiness gnawed at me internally, I reminded myself that time was what I needed most. Good decisions require patience. So I pushed the hair and James’s anxiety aside, clutching my smile like a shield against the storm brewing inside.
Plans and Friends

Later, as James vanished into his world of gaming, controller in hand, I found myself thinking about calling Jenny, my best friend. The words I wanted to say formed in my mind, and for a moment, I almost picked up the phone. But doubt assailed me and held me back. Sharing this with her might make things worse, making them more serious and tangled than necessary. So I let the idea fade, convincing myself that patience was the most sensible choice. For now, this was something I had to face alone.
Choosing Silence
I waited, carefully measuring every thought, as if one of them could tip the balance into chaos. What if it was a simple misunderstanding? Better to remain silent and let events unfold. I felt it was too soon to stir the pot without a clearer idea of the direction to take. So I kept my secrets to myself, cradling them gently, preserving the calm around James a little longer so as not to arouse suspicion.
Persistent Doubts

The days passed, as ordinary as ever, but every glance at James brought the hair back to my mind, a persistent shadow I couldn’t escape. Each morning began with the same unanswered question: What do I do now? I studied James’s face, looking for some sign of change, some hidden answer beneath his unwavering composure. But nothing seemed to change. Still, the hair haunted me, a persistent reminder every time I looked toward the bathroom.
