Two months later, on a sunny spring day, Manny, now officially an approved foster parent, signed the final papers. Hope, dressed in bright new clothes, looked up at him with a genuine smile that finally reached her eyes. Max stood at her side, his tail giving a low, steady thud against the tile floor.
“Officer Manny,” she said, using the name he had grown to cherish.
“It’s just Dad now, Hope,” he corrected gently.
“Okay, Dad,” she beamed. “Can Max sleep on the end of my bed tonight? Just until I feel warm enough?”
Manny crouched down, tears blurring his vision. He hugged her close, her scent now one of warm soap, not cold trash. “Max can sleep wherever he wants, sweetie. You are home. You are both home.”

The once-sleepless officer watched the girl and the magnificent dog walk out into the sunlight. The long, dark night of his life, and hers, was finally over. The truth had broken his heart, but the love that emerged from the rubble had healed it entirely.
