The next few hours were an agonizing wait. Manny paced, the scent of antiseptic and fear heavy in the air. Dr. Reyes finally emerged, pulling him into a private corner. The doctor’s face was grim.
“Officer Hart, the hypothermia is stabilizing, but that’s not the main issue,” Dr. Reyes began, his voice low and strained. “She has old, healed fractures—ribs, wrist. Evidence of long-term malnutrition. She’s perhaps six years old, but weighs like a toddler.”
Manny swallowed the knot in his throat. “Abuse, then. Abandoned.”
