It was a blistering hot Tuesday morning in the suburbs—the kind of heat that bred irritability and bad decisions. Sophia was enjoying her iced latte, admiring the freshly built privacy fence surrounding her newly renovated pool. It was a modest boundary, but it secured her peace. That peace evaporated instantly.
Brenda, the neighbor, stomped over, her face beet-red under the morning sun, flip-flops slapping the pavement. “You need to tear that eyesore down!” she commanded.
Sophia raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me, Brenda?”
“That pool has always been open!” Brenda shrieked, pointing a furious finger. “The previous owner let my family use it all the time. You have no right to gate it off!”
“Brenda, I own the property now,” Sophia explained calmly, trying to maintain her composure. “There’s no lifeguard, and the liability is enormous. It’s simply not safe to keep it open to the neighborhood.”
Brenda’s face contorted with outrage. “The old owner was generous! You are going to regret this, Sophia!” She spun around and stormed back across her lawn, muttering dark promises.
Sophia hoped the argument was over. She was wrong.
