Clara guided Lily back upstairs to a private, safe room away from the maternity ward. Lily was still shaking, but the terror was starting to give way to exhausted relief.
“Thank you,” Lily whispered, looking at Clara, her eyes welling up with tears that weren’t born of fear this time. “Thank you for staying.”
Over the next few days, while the hospital secured a temporary restraining order against Eleanor and Michael, Lily began to process everything. The social workers explained her options: protection, counseling, and long-term support. They ensured that Lily’s father—who had been traveling abroad and unaware of the gravity of the situation—was contacted and arrived immediately.
