Nurse Clara Intervenes
Clara didn’t hesitate. Eleanor’s frantic lie and Lily’s silent plea confirmed her worst fears. She immediately dialed the hospital’s social services line.
“I need an urgent intervention,” Clara said, her voice tight but professional. “Room 314, Lily and Eleanor… last name pending. I have documented evidence of potential non-consensual incest on the birth form. The mother is covering for the brother, Michael, and is attempting an immediate, unsupervised discharge.”
As she spoke, she rushed to the nurse’s station, grabbing the original chart and the scrawled birth form—critical evidence. The social worker promised to intercept Eleanor and Lily at the main exit in minutes.
Clara raced toward the elevators, her heart pounding. She caught sight of them near the lobby doors: Eleanor, forcing a wide, fake smile as she hailed a cab; Lily, pale and defeated, clutching the bundled baby.
