Ashley looked at him for a long moment. She saw the man she loved, but she saw the scars now, too. The silence in the church was long, the guests outside surely wondering if the bride had fled.
“No,” Ashley said finally, her voice gaining strength. “We don’t stop. But we don’t pretend this didn’t happen. We don’t build a life on secrets anymore.”
When the doors to the chapel finally opened, the waiting room fell silent. No explanations were offered to the curious guests. The ceremony resumed without spectacle.
Ashley walked down the aisle with a steadier, slower step. Bill met her gaze this time, unflinching, his face open and vulnerable. Rowena watched from her seat, her hands folded over the lace of her daughter’s dress, her eyes wet but her shoulders finally unburdened.

The vows were spoken differently than Ashley had imagined—more deliberate, more solemn. Love, she realized, wasn’t just a celebration of the present; it was the courage to acknowledge the past, even when it arrived late and uninvited.
As they were pronounced married, Ashley felt grounded. The future would be shaped by this honesty, whether it was easy or not. She glanced once at Rowena, who met her eyes and gave a small, graceful nod of understanding. The ghost had been acknowledged, and finally, they could all begin to move forward.
