Christmas is often called a season of kindness, but for one young British couple 50 years ago, a single good deed became a lifelong journey that reshaped their entire world.
On December 23, 1975, Rob and Diane Parsons were preparing for the holidays in their Cardiff home when they heard a knock at the door. Standing on the threshold was a man holding a bin bag of his belongings in one hand and a frozen chicken in the other.
Rob looked closely at the man’s face. He vaguely recognized him as Ronnie Lockwood, a boy he had occasionally seen at Sunday school years ago. Back then, Rob had been told to be kind to Ronnie because he was “a bit different.”
“I asked him, ‘Ronnie, what’s with the chicken?’” Rob recalls. “He said, ‘Someone gave it to me for Christmas.’ Then, I said the words that changed our lives forever—and I’m still not entirely sure why I said them. I said, ‘Come on in.’”
