The Doctor Stops Counting
The technician began moving the cold ultrasound wand over Lauren’s belly. Initially, there was a small, professional smile on her face, but as the black-and-white images appeared, the room went dead silent. “Is everything okay? Is there a problem?” David whispered, the tension in the room becoming suffocating. He feared the worst—that the pregnancy wasn’t viable.
“Well… I’ve counted five,” the doctor said, his voice trembling slightly. He sounded as if he couldn’t believe the words coming out of his own mouth.
Lauren and David gasped, their brains struggling to compute the logistics of five infants. But before they could even process that staggering number, the doctor moved the wand one more time to the far corner of the uterus and completely froze.
“Wait,” the doctor breathed, his eyes scanning the monitor in disbelief. “There’s one more. It’s six. Lauren, you’re having sextuplets.”
