The Silent Sentinel

Traffic ground to a sudden, screeching halt as a bald eagle sat immovable in the center of the asphalt. Frustrated commuters leaned on their horns and shouted from windows, but the bird remained a statue. Amanda, driven by a mix of annoyance and intrigue, stepped out into the humid air.
Two police officers met her halfway, their faces etched with the same confusion. As they crept toward the majestic creature, the initial irritation in the air shifted into an eerie, heavy dread. The eagle looked perfect, yet fundamentally “wrong.” Breaking the thick silence, Officer Daniels whispered, “Look at the wing…”
The Initial Inspection
Officer Daniels clicked on his flashlight, the beam cutting through the gray afternoon. “Easy now, let’s see what’s wrong,” he murmured, his eyes scanning the eagle’s feathers for blood or trauma. The crowd behind them fell into a hushed expectant silence. Amanda hovered nearby, her heart racing. “Is it hurt?” she asked, her voice cracking. “I can’t tell yet,” Daniels replied, his focus entirely on the bird’s subtle movements, searching for any telltale sign of a struggle.
