I reached the back door in a blur of motion, fumbling with my keys before slamming the deadbolt home. I moved through the house like a ghost, locking every window, pulling every curtain, and sliding the security bars into place. With shaking hands, I dialed 911, my voice cracking as I explained the situation to the dispatcher.

“Stay on the line,” she said, her voice a calm anchor in the storm of my adrenaline. “Officers are three minutes out.”

I crept toward the kitchen window, moving the edge of the curtain just a fraction of an inch. Through the gap, I saw the open hatch, a black wound in the green grass. And then, a shape emerged from the shadows of the old oak tree. A man, dressed in a tattered gray hoodie, stood at the edge of the hole. He didn’t look at the cellar. He stood perfectly still, his head tilted at an unnatural angle, staring directly at my kitchen window. He knew exactly where I was.

The sirens began as a distant wail, growing into a deafening roar that shattered the afternoon silence. Three patrol cars tore up the gravel driveway, their lights casting long, strobing shadows across the lawn. I watched as the officers vaulted the fence, their weapons drawn, their voices a cacophony of commands. The man in the hoodie didn’t run. He simply dropped to his knees and raised his hands, a terrifyingly calm smile on his face as the zip-ties clicked shut.

Later, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the yard was flooded by the harsh glare of police work lights, a detective knocked on my door. He was holding a heavy evidence bag. Inside were several items they had recovered from a hidden compartment beneath the sleeping bag: a set of my spare house keys I never knew were missing, a long hunting knife, and a notebook filled with my daily schedule, down to the minute I brushed my teeth.

“You’re lucky you hit that hatch today,” the detective said, his eyes weary. “According to his notes, he wasn’t planning on staying under the ivy much longer. He was planning on moving inside tonight.”

I looked out at the backyard, now crisscrossed with yellow crime scene tape. The ivy was gone, but the silence that replaced it was far more terrifying.
