The evidence piled up as Lauren pulled an all-nighter. The “Charles” at her door had used Mabel’s grief and the confusion of her brother Arthur’s death to seize power of attorney. He had been slowly sedating her, replacing her memories with “episodes” and her autonomy with “protection.”

Lauren didn’t hesitate. At dawn, she drove through the slush to the local station. She spread the printouts, the pill bottles, and Mabel’s note across the desk.
“Identity fraud, embezzlement, and elder abuse,” Lauren said, her voice steady and clear. For the first time in years, she didn’t doubt her own perception. She wasn’t “remembering it wrong.” She was the only one who saw the truth.
