The Silent Plea
“The roads are clearing,” Charles said softly, standing up. “Let’s get you home to your own bed, Mabel. It’s safe there. No more ‘following’ shadows.”

Mabel stood, her movements wooden. As Charles turned to gather her coat, Mabel caught Lauren’s eye. For a split second, the “dreamy” look vanished. Her gaze was sharp, terrified, and piercingly sane. She didn’t say a word, but she leaned against the table, her hand surreptitiously sliding a small business card toward Lauren.
Lauren covered the card with her hand just as Charles turned back.
“Thank you again, Lauren,” Charles said, his smile not reaching his eyes. “I’ll make sure your kindness is… remembered.”
