An Unexpected Guest
At the time, Rob was just 27 and Diane was 26. The couple realized that Ronnie, who lived with autism, was in desperate need of care. They cooked his chicken, helped him get cleaned up, and invited him to stay for the holiday.
What began as a fleeting act of compassion turned into a unique, 45-year partnership defined by love and compromise. It lasted until the day Ronnie passed away.
When they took him in, Rob and Diane had been married for only four years. Ronnie was nearly 30 and had been homeless since he was 15, drifting around Cardiff and surviving on odd jobs. To make him feel welcome that first Christmas, the couple asked their relatives to bring him small gifts—socks, toiletries, anything to unwrap.
“I can still see him sitting there,” Diane says. “He sat at the Christmas table with those presents and wept. He had never experienced that kind of love before.”
