The commotion was so intense that the lead flight attendant keyed the interphone to the cockpit. “Captain, we have a passenger having a violent episode in the cabin. We can’t restrain her.”
Ten seconds later, the cockpit door opened. Captain Miller, a veteran with thirty years of flight time, stepped out. He expected to find a panicked adult; instead, he found a small girl pointing a trembling finger at window 22A, her face drenched in tears and sweat.
The Moment of Truth
“Look!” Maya gasped, grabbing the Captain’s hand with surprising strength. “Don’t look at the computer! Look out the window!”
Miller, intending to calm the child, leaned across Maya’s father and peered out. His breath hitched. He didn’t see condensation. He saw a massive structural failure in the fuel vent. A torrent of Jet-A fuel was pouring out, and the friction of the air was creating a static charge around the mist.
