The Race Against Time

“My God,” Miller whispered. He didn’t wait. He sprinted back to the cockpit, shouting over his shoulder, “Everyone, strap in! Now!”
The cockpit was silent. The fuel gauges showed a slight imbalance, but within “normal” parameters because the sensors in that specific tank had short-circuited. “Emergency descent!” Miller yelled to his co-pilot. “Shut down engine two! Fire suppression to the pylon! Now, now, now!”
The plane tilted sharply as they began a terrifying drop to thicker, wetter air, hoping to douse any potential sparks. The cabin fell into a heavy, prayerful silence. Maya sat perfectly still, holding her father’s hand. He wasn’t sleeping anymore; he was looking at his daughter as if seeing her for the first time.
The Safe Ground

They made an emergency landing at a remote military strip in the Midway Atoll. As the plane screeched to a halt, surrounded by foam-spraying fire trucks, the silence was finally broken by the sound of 290 people breathing in unison.
